From an interview with Quentin Verlé.
Passionate about art, music, and graphic design, Quentin is originally from Belgium. He moved to Canada in 2012 on a working holiday visa in search of new career opportunities and eventually ended up staying here and making Canada home. At Arrive, Quentin takes on the role of a lead product designer. Here’s one of his favourite holiday recipes.
Cheese Fondue
French people (those from France and Belgium) love their cheese and are very social when it comes to their food. They often invite people over during the winter season to have either Cheese Fondue or Raclette cheese (another popular cheese dish).
Cheese Fondue is a very social French dish and extremely popular during holidays. It’s simple, you buy the fondue cheese at the grocery store, get some fresh baguette bread, buy some white wine and you are good to go. It reminds me of home a lot as it’s a dish I used to often eat with my dad.
Ingredients required to prepare Cheese Fondue
- 3 types of cheeses (for example: Morbier, Gruyere, and Compté). You should plan for at least 200 grams of cheese per person. Some stores carry ready-prepared fondy kits.
- Bread, cut into small pieces. The bread shouldn’t be too fresh and soft; if it’s a little dry, then it will hold up better when it’s dipped in cheese.
How to prepare Cheese Fondue
To get started, you will need a fondue pot, which usually comes with one stick per person.
- Cut the cheese into small cubes.
- Melt the cheese cubes in a fondue pot, stirring regularly, until the mixture is smooth and liquidy.
- Optional: Some traditional recipes call for a dash of white wine to start off the melting process.
- Grab a piece of bread and stick it on the end of your dipping stick.
- Then dip the bread in the cheese and enjoy!
Notes:
Your home will smell pretty strongly of cheese afterwards.
